My feature on The Walkmen →
Check out my feature on New York/DC’s garage-pop darlings The Walkmen. Thanks to organist Pete Bauer for the interview.
Leithauser’s heartbreaking, nostalgia-fueled lyrics translate precisely what the moody, surf-inflected guitars and rich organs were trying to tell us all along: Life as an adult, punctuated with sharp moments of beauty and meaningfulness, never suddenly snaps into...

My cover story on KORT [Cortney Tidwell +... →
KORT [Kurt Wagner and Cortney Tidwell] are releasing a record by the name of Invariable Heartache on Oct. 18. It was recorded here in Nashville by a collection of brilliant Nashvillian players. The crazy part? It’s not being released here. These two are beloved in Europe, but toil in comparative obscurity here in the States; though Lambchop is on Merge and both ’Chop and Tidwell are on City...

Weezer to break up for $10 million? James Burns... →
lactarded:
Awesome.
I appreciate the idea — I certainly appreciate founder James Burns’ sense of satire. I can say that I’ve been burned by their shittiness myself. But I think I might have a better idea: Stop buying their albums, and instead donate your $15.99 to a worthy charity. Do you really want to reward these people with another $10 million?

Interview with + story on The National →
I talked to Scott Devendorf of The National and wrote a preview piece for their Oct. 3 show at The Ryman in Nashville. An excerpt:
As most National fans will tell you, falling in love with their catalog is not unlike committing to a long-term relationship. There’s drama. There’s frustration. There’s compromise, uncertainty and moments of starry-eyed infatuation. On your first...

Record #372: Heartbeater's 'Slow Waves'
Heartbeater’s a local rock outfit who will be releasing their brand-new LP, Slow Waves, on Oct. 4 at legendary wax-retailing outlet Grimey’s. I listened to it today, and I’ll be previewing it in next week’s paper. A sneak peek:
” [Slow Waves is] saturated in all the right legitimate, record store clerk-approved rock influence: washy but smart surf-rock noodling...

Record #371: Jenny & Johnny's 'I'm Having Fun Now'
Gave this one a spin and wrote it up for next week’s paper. Hate to prematurely leak stuff I composed specifically for the ole day job, so note the carefully placed ellipses. Wanna know what I redacted? Pick up the paper or check the site in a few days. Since I’m sure you’re dying to know.
… the pet project of Jenny Lewis … and her Scottish-American singer-songwriter...

Best Coast's 'Crazy for You' →
Here’s what is basically a long Critic’s Pick for Best Coast’s show in Nashville on Sept. 12. We’ll call this review #370. A snippet:
Truth be told, Best Coast aren’t especially unlike other recent, much-buzzed-about, surf-influenced, chilled-out indie-garage outfits — Real Estate, Harlem, Vivian Girls, et al. There is, however, one key difference: Aside from the...
